So, what wedding dresses are the brides of 2011 wearing?

A look at the bridal fairs across the world reveals the following trends: something old and something new...

Here comes the bride, all dressed in white . . .or not!

A quiick look at the bridal styles for the 2011 season as revealed by the big designers show that while traditional white will never be out of fashion, this year cream and ivory are certainly the in colours, offset by, of all colours – black! Not bold and in contrasting fabric, but found in accessories like hats or veils or bows or gloves and in embroidered motifs.
Another favourite is green: a wide variety of embroidered designs and images have been taken from nature to make a wonderful accompaniment to the natural shades of cream, or grey or rose or champagne which are so popular this year.
The smooth lines of a classic A-line or Princess style gown have always been popular, but this year the changes are rung by a layered look. A popular new shape, which enhances the shapeliness of a bride’s figure, is a form-fitting trumpet or fishtail gown. Overlay this with tulle or lace, chiffon or organza to make for a soft, feminine look, while not emulating the meringue doll of past years. After that, the shimmer of satin ribbon makes for a stylish finish. Decorative details are found in the crystal or seed pearls which embellish many bodices, waistcoats or lacy shawls.
While floor length gowns remain a favourite, variety has been introduced in the form of cocktail length or above the knee gowns which have become increasingly more popular. Hemlines and necklines too have changed and the emphasis this year is away from the symmetry of the past. Whether they are off the shoulder, single shoulder, scooped necks, plunging necklines or strapless – they are all set to display beautiful necks and shoulders to their best advantage.
An unusual back detail can be the making of the bridal gown. Whether this is in the form of ruffles, or a bow or an unusual embroidered design, it can be the focal point of her dress. After all, quite a lot of attention during the ceremony is on her back!
Whatever the trend, the most important thing for a bride to remember is that it is her day: so the choice of what she is wearing is up to her. Slavish following of the advice or predictions of fashion gurus will be disastrous if she does not choose a style that suits her personality, her figure and the particular requirements of her day. Being comfortable in her gown and happy with her choice will go a long way towards ensuring that her wedding day is one she will remember and treasure forever.
